USA: Week 6 Broiler Market Review 2022

The average prices for broilers in the US market as of February 11, 2022 have not changed. Over the week, the price tag did not increase, while there was an increase in sales volumes - by 1.2% over the week.  

The average cost of broilers in January 2022 was 131.39 cents/lb (+5.6% MoM, +59.7% YoY), with total sales of around 40,755 thousand pounds (-20% MoM, + 6.6% per year).

An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) on a turkey farm in Indiana has caused alarm among poultry producers. it also increased the risk for the MEAT market as a whole, given the current mismatch between demand and available supply. Poultry producers have been on high alert following widespread cases of HPAI in the European Union and Asia. USDA AnnouncementEarlier this year, reports that bird flu had been found in wild birds in South and North Carolina made the theoretical risk all too real. The USDA then reported 91 cases of avian influenza in wild birds in several US states, but all cases, at least until this week, have been in wild birds in migratory regions. However, these regions account for the bulk of US broiler production.

The USDA emphasizes that there is currently no impact on poultry, and supply and trade disruptions remain very limited so far. However, if sporadic cases of HPAI occur in commercial transactions, the industry may indeed be more affected by trade disruptions, especially if large manufacturing states are affected. Increased press coverage could also impact consumer demand, especially as HPAI has resulted in some cases of infection and death in people who came into close contact with live birds. At this time, farm biosecurity levels and consumer education are key.
