Hungary and Slovakia have been offered a longer period to give up Russian oil – until the end of 2023.The EU itself plans to implement the ban within six months

The European Union will allow Hungary and Slovakia to continue buying Russian crude oil under existing contracts until the end of 2023, despite the future embargo, a source told REUTERS.

Earlier, the HEAD of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the EU plans to abandon the supply of Russian crude oil within six months, and the import of refined products by the end of 2022.

To convince doubting EU member states to join the embargo, Brussels offered Hungary and Slovakia a longer period to comply with the terms of the sanctions, the source said.

Von der Leyen announced EU plans to impose an embargo on all Russian oil Politics

The EU plans to impose an embargo on Russian oil and oil products as part of the sixth package of sanctions. The Kremlin stated that such a ban would negatively affect the energy balances of the continent and lead to changes in the global oil market. At the same time , the United States will remain on its own, and Europe will have a hard time, said presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov. “This is a decision that will hit everyone,” he warned.

In March, the United States imposed an embargo on Russian oil. Against the background of the ban and upcoming sanctions from the EU, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed to speed up the reorientation of oil and gas exports, in particular, to study the prospects for the markets of Africa, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region.
