The European Union intends to soften the sixth package of sanctions against RUSSIA, in particular, to abandon the proposed ban on the transportation of Russian oil to third countries by the EU courts, writes BLOOMBERG citing sources.

At the same time, a ban on insurance for ships carrying Russian oil is still under discussion and would be a major barrier to exports if approved, the sources said.

The lack of a common position among the G7 countries played a major role in the decision to abandon the ban on the transportation of Russian oil by European ships. Thus, Greece, whose economy is largely dependent on shipping, advocated for the exclusion of this provision from the sanctions package, the agency said.

However, the remaining clauses in the package would still make Moscow's position much more difficult, sources said, as the insurance ban would cover most of the world's oil tanker fleet carrying Russian oil .

Hungary vowed to prevent EU embargo on oil from Russia Politics

On the eve of Bloomberg reported that the EU permanent representatives met to discuss new sanctions against Russia, but did not reach an agreement.

The HEAD of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said earlier that the sixth package of sanctions should include the rejection of Russian oil by the end of 2022 and the disconnection of a number of banks from SWIFT. Bloomberg and REUTERS also reported that Brussels is proposing to ban European courts from providing services related to the transportation of Russian oil to third countries.

In order for the package to be accepted, all 27 EU countries must agree on it. As the agency wrote, the meeting participants failed to get Hungary's consent to a ban on Russian oil imports, while Greece and Cyprus have not yet supported restrictions on oil transportation.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky pointed out that the European Union does not have a unified position on the issue of adopting part of the sanctions against Russia. He called on the EU to take a unified position.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said on May 6 that Budapest would not allow the EU to impose an embargo on Russian oil, as this would undermine the security of the country's energy supply and its economy.

The country is ready to defend its economic gains until the EU's plan to impose an embargo on oil from Russia "collapses," he said.
