On the site of the multifunctional ice arena "Novosibirsk-Arena" it is planned to hold all-Russian and interregional figure skating tournaments. This was told to TASS by the Minister of Physical Culture and Sports of the Novosibirsk Region Sergey Akhapov.
“At the moment, sports training in figure skating is taking place at the Winter Sports Center, the Energia sports school in Novosibirsk and the Berdsk sports school. In this case, the new ice arena can be used for holding all-Russian and interregional competitions in this sport,” the official said.
He added that the Ice Palace of Sports will also become the home ground for the Novosibirsk hockey club Sibir. In addition, the Novosibirsk Arena will be able to transform, which will allow it to host cultural, exhibition and sports events.
Construction of the Novosibirsk Arena multifunctional ice arena began in 2019 as part of Novosibirsk’s preparations for the 2023 IIHF Youth Ice Hockey World Championship. The facility was scheduled to be completed by September 2022. However, at the end of February, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) deprived Russian cities of the right to host the tournament. The decision was made against the backdrop of a special operation of the Russian army in Ukraine. After that, the Minister of Sports of the Novosibirsk Region, Sergei Akhapov, said that, despite the decision of the IIHF, the new ice arena would be built on time.
The total cost of building the ice arena and eight more facilities for the MFM-2023 by September 2021 amounted to 22.5 billion rubles.
