Pig futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) tumbled on Friday as investors worried about the prospect of food inflation, which will weigh heavily on US MEAT consumer demand as the summer grilling season kicks off.

The June lean hog index fell 2.975 cents to 104.100 cents a pound. Meanwhile, July hogs slipped 2.375 cents to 107.05 cents a pound, offsetting Thursday's gains.

“There are big concerns about demand right now as exports are slow and CHINA is largely out of the market,” said Don Roose, president of US Commodities in Iowa.

Pig slaughter continued to be high, with 457,000 slaughtered compared to 446,000 a week earlier and 461,000 in the same period last year.
