The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture has released the Spanish Food Consumption Report 2020, which shows that MEAT and fish made up a third of the Spanish food basket budget last year.
Overall, spending on food in and out of the home was 102 billion euros, down 3.2% from 2019, while purchases rose 4.4% to 34.76 million tonnes. Supermarkets remain the establishment of choice for consumers and account for 47.6% of food purchases. At the same time, brick-and-mortar stores regained some of the market share lost over the past 10 years, reaching 13.8%, and played an important role for citizens, for example, by delivering purchases to the homes of the elderly or the most vulnerable during the pandemic.
In addition, Luis Planas, Minister of Agriculture, highlighted the importance of the online shopping phenomenon, and although it barely reaches 2.3% of the food trade market share, its sales increased by 61.5% during 2020.
Bread (28% of consumption), meat (20.8%), vegetables (20.2%) and bakery products (16.4%) were most often consumed outside the home.
