The world’s first registered CORONAVIRUS vaccine, Sputnik V, stopped protecting completely with the advent of the COVID-19 “kraken” strain; clinical trials of the updated vaccine are underway. The HEAD of the Center named after him said this in an interview with Gazeta.ru. Gamaleya (developer of Sputnik V) Alexander Ginzburg.
According to him, the original version of Sputnik protected against COVID-19 for the first two years, that is, from the moment of registration, from August 2020 to July 2022. However, starting in mid-summer 2022, when the Omicron 1, 2 and 3 variants of COVID-19 emerged, the vaccine's effectiveness dropped eightfold. When options 4 and 5 appeared, the efficiency dropped by 20 times.
“And when the XBB.1.5 version of the Omicron (Kraken) appeared - this was in January 2023 - Sputnik simply stopped protecting completely. Therefore, it was necessary to change the antigenic composition of the vaccine last summer,” the scientist added.
According to him, the center’s scientists prepared new versions of vaccines in the laboratory, and they vaccinated the center’s employees. Clinical trials of Sputnik V based on the Kraken antigen are underway and will end on December 10. The new vaccine may enter civilian circulation in March.
In August 2020, RUSSIA was the first in the world to register a vaccine against coronavirus - Sputnik V, developed by the Research Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology named after. Gamaleya. The vaccine consists of two components based on adenoviral vectors of types 26 and 5. RDIF then stated that the effectiveness of Sputnik V, based on the results of an analysis of data from 3.8 million vaccinated Russians, was 97.6%. The vaccination is carried out in two components.
RBC reported in early October that Sputnik V and Sputnik Light had disappeared from the largest private clinics in Moscow. Infectious disease DOCTOR and chief physician of Invitro-Sibir Andrei Pozdnyakov then noted that today the network does not carry out vaccination with Sputnik V and Sputnik Light, since they have lost their relevance and are already being phased out. Now, according to him, the Russian vaccine “Convasel” looks the most promising for vaccination , the action of which is not directed at the S-protein of the coronavirus, but at its more conservative, less mutable proteins.
