Next week, the European Union plans to introduce new sanctions against Belarus in connection with the situation with illegal migrants on the border with Poland. This is reported by Politico, citing sources in EU diplomatic circles.
According to the publication's sources, sanctions may be introduced as early as Monday, November 15, during a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
According to Politico, the package of sanctions will include two sections, one dedicated to people and groups responsible for organizing migration flows, the second - against those responsible for human rights violations in Belarus. As a legal basis for imposing sanctions, the EU plans to add a new category - "trafficking in human beings," sources say.
The main purpose of these sanctions is to put pressure on Belarusian officials and Belarusian airlines that help move migrants from their countries to the borders of EU countries. In particular, Politico notes, the sanctions may affect the Belarusian state-owned airline Belavia . The restrictions will affect the carrier's leasing contracts.
Also, flights to Belarus are operated by Aeroflot, UTair and Nordwind Airlines, as well as Turkish Airlines and FlyDubai, Politico points out, however, the final list of airlines affected by the sanctions has not yet been formed.
