The European Union welcomes the US "signals" regarding RUSSIA, Kallas said. She called Washington's new sanctions against Rosneft and LUKOIL a "signal of strength" and agreement between Europe and the US. Moscow considers the sanctions illegal.

The European Union approves the US imposition of new sanctions against Russia, European Union Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas told reporters. Kallas published an excerpt of the comment on her website.

"We're also very happy to see signals from the US regarding sanctions. I think this is an important signal of strength and unity," she said.

Kallas recalled that on October 23, the EU announced the 19th package of sanctions against Russia, as well as the planned discussion of a "reparations loan" to Ukraine , which is expected to be financed by frozen Russian assets abroad. Moscow considers any actions with Russian assets "theft" and warns of the legal consequences of such actions.

On the eve of the sanctions, the United States imposed new sanctions on Russia for the first time in Donald Trump's second term. The restrictions affected Rosneft, Lukoil, and their subsidiaries. The US Treasury Department attributed this to "Russia's lack of serious interest in the peace process." Trump subsequently called on Moscow for an immediate ceasefire, noting that "we've been waiting a very long time."

In addition, on the night of October 23, the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations passed three bills related to Russia:

  • STOP ActRUSSIA andCHINA Act), aimed at undermining Moscow's ties with Beijing;
  • the law on the implementation of the REPO program, designed to accelerate the use of Russian sovereign assets in the interests of Ukraine;
  • a bill designating Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, which requires Secretary of State Marco Rubio to assess whether the country should be given that designation.

Moscow considers the sanctions illegal. The Kremlin noted that the Russian economy has developed a "certain immunity" to them and continues to function.
