The incidence of covid-19 in RUSSIA due to the new strain of the omicron CORONAVIRUS may increase in January, but the number of hospitalizations and severe cases of the disease is likely to decrease. This opinion was expressed by Sergei Voznesensky, Associate Professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases at the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (PFUR), in an interview with RIA Novosti.

“An increase in the incidence is quite likely if the Omicron strain develops in us, for example, in the same way as in South Africa or in England, but the whole question is whether this increase will also be correlated, as we now see a correlation with free beds in hospitals," he said.

According to Voznesensky, the likelihood of an increase in the incidence in January is high, but there may not be a large influx of hospitalizations.

At the same time, the authorities admit that during the new wave, the number of daily detected cases of coronavirus infection may exceed 50 thousand people.
