The combination of high inflation and sanctions imposed by the West led to an egg crisis in RUSSIA. As a result, prices have increased by 42 percent over the past 12 months .
"Russia is facing a huge shortage and is asking to buy eggs . We need government intervention. If everything works out, Russia will become a huge market for us," says Vangili Subramaniam, president of the Tamil Nadu Poultry Egg Marketing Society.
Currently, Oman, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Qatar and UAE are the five countries to which India exports eggs.
"Russia is not yet open. it is just an early stage and this will be a huge opportunity. We request the government to speed up the process of establishing ties with Russia. Now there is only dialogue," said Valsan Parameswaran, secretary of the All India Poultry Products Exporters Association (AIPPEA).
He added that, judging by the demand in this country, Russia's need could be more than 50 containers per month.
India exported $110,000 worth of eggs to Russia between April and October 2023, up from $10,000 a year earlier, Indian Commerce Ministry data showed. In the first seven months of the current fiscal year, India's total egg exports nearly doubled to $53.37 million.
However, experts believe that exporting eggs to Russia may not be an easy task for India.
A senior government official said that when it comes to human HEALTH , countries, especially Western ones, are careful about the quality of imported products. These include, but are not limited to, eggs, MILK , fruits and vegetables. In the case of eggs, India does not impose any EXPORT restrictions.
"For example, if countries are going to import a particular food product, they usually approach the concerned government department. They submit a request to inspect Indian establishments and we check whether the standards associated with imports are met," the official said. “If necessary, they also ask questions,” the source added. Standards vary depending on the product and country of export.
