Experts predict a rise in MEAT prices , and this may affect beef to a greater extent. They told RBC Tyumen what factors will affect the possible increase in cost.

Falling demand for meat

Galina Chernukhina, HEAD of the Department of Commerce and Trade at the Faculty of Management at Synergy University, noted a downward trend in meat consumption.

The average level of consumption of beef meat per year is 60-80 kg per person. In 2022, according to the FAO, meat consumption in RUSSIA amounted to about 83 kg. However, according to experts, a slight (3.4%) decrease in demand for beef was recorded .

The main factors behind the decline in demand for beef, according to Galina Chernukhina, were a decrease in household income and the desire to save money. Therefore, consumers choose cheaper types of meat - poultry and pork. In terms of consumption volumes, chicken is in the first place, and pork is in the second place . Beef takes the third place - about 2 million tons.

“The value of beef as one of the most common types of meat is high. it is one of the most important food products, which contains up to 20% protein and up to 12% fat, as well as vitamins A, C, B6, B12, E, B3. Beef meat also contains mineral salts of sodium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, copper, zinc, etc., as well as carotene,” said Galina Chernukhina.

Reasons for rising prices

Galina Chernukhina noted that the downward trend in demand for beef will continue in 2023, which is caused by rising prices due to the reduction of cattle in private farms, an increase in the cost of meat production, and an increase in the cost of meat in the world.

Vitaly Shmalts, a food tech expert, founder of the Licensium.online license marketplace and the Food Up business accelerator, is confident that meat will remain an important part of the Russian diet . He also believes that meat prices will continue to rise, but this will happen in leaps and bounds.

“This is due to the fact that the cultivation of cattle and pork has a long cycle. This in turn entails high costs for animal feed. In addition, the costs of logistics, medical care, and other related products are also growing. Therefore, it is obvious that meat prices will rise,” Vitaly Schmalts explained.

At the same time, according to Ekaterina Nazarenko, an analyst at the research company NTech, the cost of beef will grow the most, since the own number of cattle in the Russian Federation is not enough to fully meet the needs of the domestic market and imported products account for a large share . The rise in prices for pork and poultry is expected within the limits of inflation, and there are no prerequisites for a strong rise in prices for them.

What will slow down the rise in prices

According to Ekaterina Nazarenko, at the beginning of the year, the Eurasian Economic Commission agreed on the duty-free import of 100,000 tons of beef, which will somewhat curb the rise in prices for this type of meat and its products.

Galina Chernukhina also noted that the state policy for the development of animal husbandry and the growth of farms, as well as the extension of the quota for its duty-free import, will help slow down the rise in prices for beef this year.

“Our state is already taking a number of measures to try to contain the rise in prices. For example, from January 1, 2023, Russian livestock breeders will receive subsidies to reimburse part of the costs of raising cattle and subsequent production. AlsoThe Ministry of Agriculture recently announced the launch of a grant program to support start-up entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector,” added Vitaly Shmalts.
