New Zealand's red MEAT sector's exports reached NZ$10 billion ($6.7 billion) last year, up 9% from 2020, according to data released by the Meat Industry Association (MIA).

CHINA remained the largest importer of beef, accounting for 46% of total exports. However, the volume of beef exported to the giant Asian market remained unchanged, but its value increased by more than 30%. Beef exports to the US fell by 15%, although the value rose by 16%. Japan, the third largest market for New Zealand beef, maintained the same pace of imports as in 2020 (7% of total exports), while its value increased by 39%.

“Despite all the disruptions and labor shortages, we were able to meet the global demand for red meat to the maximum and achieve record EXPORT earnings. The sector continues to operate in the most difficult conditions,” said MIA Executive DIRECTOR Sirma Karapeyeva.

Lamb and beef exports increased by 5% and 9% year on year, respectively, with both commodities valued at more than NZ$4 billion (US$2.68 billion) for the year. Exports of related products also increased by 19% to almost NZ$2bn ($1.34bn).

This year, however, Ms Karapeyeva expects supply chain problems to seriously undermine exports.
