Organics and food waste from shops and restaurants, for example, expired products, can be used with benefit, the Russian Environmental Operator (REO) believes. The organization applied to the Russian Economic University. G. V. Plekhanov with a request to analyze modern methods of processing food waste and organic matter in order to choose the most effective ones. In the announcement, the REO claims that the use of these technologies could cut waste disposal in landfills by half.

As experts of the REO explain, now solid waste processing is being established in RUSSIA, but organic matter and food waste are processed only for one tenth of the total volume of waste generated. Meanwhile, many food waste with a slightly expired shelf life still retains its nutritional properties and can be reused, for example, to create animal feed.

Scientists have proposed several options for creating feed from waste, the report says. Basically, these are various drying methods - steam, using microwave ovens and so on, as well as digestion. Fish, grains, vegetables and many other products are suitable as raw materials, the main task in the production of feed is to clean products from possible harmful impurities and parasites.

Now the REO is considering the possibility of building an enterprise for processing food waste into feed, the report says. This will benefit the livestock industry, REO experts say, because feed costs account for a large part of the cost of animal production, and livestock breeders are always looking for new cheap sources of raw materials for feed.
