The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said Friday that Mexico's chief veterinarian notified it of the NWS finding in a cow at a checkpoint near the southern border with Guatemala.

NWS larvae often enter through an open wound and feed on the living flesh of warm-blooded animals, including humans, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.

The USDA warned that the infestation may be difficult to spot at first, but may show up as growing wounds, creamy larvae and signs of discomfort.
