On the final trading day of the week, pork tenderloin futures closed 2 to 30 cents lower. The national hog carcass price fell another 26 cents to $98.83 on Friday. The USDA estimates hog slaughter for the week at 2.531 million HEAD through Saturday. This is up from 2.486 million head in the same week last year.
Weekly pork EXPORT sales were 23,100 metric tons, down 12% from the previous week and down 26% from the previous 4-week average.
The USDA cut its pork production forecast by 105 million pounds from last month amid "lower expected slaughter rates and lower carcass weights," although the figure is expected to rise 0.6% from last year. The pork export forecast was cut by 125 million pounds, although shipments are still expected to rise 7.2% from last year. For 2024 , the USDA made no changes to its pork production forecast but cut its export forecast. Pork production is expected to rise 0.6% from this year, while exports are expected to rise 1.5% from this year's level.
