USA: Cattle market overview for the 30th week of 2022

Live cattle futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) edged lower on Thursday under pressure from falling cash prices and a large stock of salable cattle on the US Southern Plains .

“We are still seeing cow herd liquidation and heavy stocking of heifers,” said Scott Varilek, broker at Kooima Kooima Varilek Trading Inc.

The increase in the number of heifers indicates that the number of cows and calves continues to decline as pastures are depleted due to drought and high feed prices increase operating costs.

Cash market cattle traded lower on Thursday, with Northern Plains trading seeing moderate to good demand but falling $5.50 to $138 a cwt while Southern Plains cattle traded at $135. dollars per centner.

The USDA MEAT Inventory Report showed a record stock of 516.2 million pounds of beef. While this may mean sluggish demand, it could also be due to the construction of new processing facilities due to continued active exports.
