Approximately 101 million cattle and calves are on US farms, according to a bovine report released by the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) .

The number of beef cows is 31.4 million heads, which is 2 percent less than a year ago. Out of 101 million heads, all calving cows and heifers amounted to 40.9 million heads. Dairy cows - 9.50 million heads, which is 2 percent more The number of heifers weighing 500 pounds or more as of July 1, 2021 was 16.0 million, down 1 percent from 16.2 million as of July 1, 2020.

Meat heifers counted 4.30 million heads, which is 2 percent less than a year ago. Dairy heifers counted 4.10 million heads, which is 3% more than in the previous year.

The number of fattening cattle in the United States at all feedlots as of July 1, 2021 was 13.4 million HEAD, down 1 percent from the previous year.

The US calf count is expected to be 35.1 million in 2021, slightly down from last year.

Also, a report was recently published on stocks of meat in cold storage warehouses. Total red meat inventories in June were down 4.3% month-on-month and 7.5% year-over-year to 868.8 million pounds. Total beef stocks in cold stores were 398.7 million pounds, down 4.3% from last month and down 7.1% from last year. Total June beef inventories are at their lowest level in almost seven years, when they stood at 380.9 million pounds in October 2014. Inventories of boneless and bone-in beef fell 7.3% and 5.0% respectively from a year earlier to 369.0 and 29.7 million pounds. Boneless beef is at its lowest level since November 2014, while stocks of bone-in beef last hit a low in May 2020.
