Poultry production in Serbia is booming, especially in terms of local livestock production, Ivan Stanojlovic, chairman of the Serbian Poultry Association, told local channel AgroTV. While the African swine fever virus has crippled the pig industry and the livestock industry has been struggling for decades, poultry farmers are thriving.

Poultry farmers currently almost completely meet the demand on the domestic market. According to Stanojlovic, in order to gain new impetus for development, the sector needs to unlock its EXPORT potential.

“The biggest problem is that we, as an industry, are currently not allowed to export chicken MEAT , day-old chicks or eggs to the European Union,” Stanojlovic said, adding that association members are working hard to get the green light to sale of poultry products to European buyers, including through interaction with the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture.

“I believe that technologically we are already ready for Europe, and given that our food products are more accessible, we can also be competitive on price,” Stanojlovic said.
