The ban on increasing the livestock of farm animals is adopted at the level of law, will last for the next 4 years and applies to 68 municipalities of Catalonia. As of now, farmers in the region collectively keep 8 million pigs, 38 million birds and 700 thousand cattle.

The authorities explain their position by the fact that they are trying to avoid the overproduction of manure, which cannot be effectively disposed of. Pigs alone generate more than 17 million tons of slurry in the region. To reduce the risks of environmental impact, farms install specialized manure processing equipment. However, in the eyes of the government, such actions are not enough.

The industry is convinced that such restrictive regulations will have a negative impact on the development of the livestock sector, preventing Spain from strengthening its leadership position among other EU countries.

And this fact will be taken into account when preparing the monthly analytical report Meatinfo.ru
