Dry conditions in some regions have affected mating conditions for sheep. Wet winters and springs across most of New Zealand were an additional factor influencing the condition of the ewes and the survival of the lambs.

The decline in the number of lambs is the eighth season in a row with fewer lambs born than the previous season. In the spring of 2022, the number of lambs was 15% lower than in the spring of 2014, when the number of lambs was 25.8 million.

The EXPORT of lamb MEAT in 2022-2023, due to the reduction in livestock, will decrease by 1.6% to 17.5 million heads, analysts estimate.
