Overall MEAT consumption in Germany is declining due to high prices. There were ten percent fewer pig slaughters in the first quarter of 2022 than last year, and the number of cattle under the butcher's knife decreased by 14 percent, according to data from the Agricultural Market Research Company (AMI). The "Greens" demanded to abandon the production of meat, as this adversely affects the environment. Inflation and high energy prices have done everything for them, writes Focus magazine.
Eco-activists proceed from the fact that less meat means more grain for EXPORT to troubled countries. They cite data from the Ministry of Agriculture that only 20 percent of grain grown is used for human consumption, while 58 percent ends up in feeders for pigs and cattle.
On average, the price per kilogram of red meat has risen in Germany by more than 12 percent, the price of pork by just under eight percent and the price of beef by 15 percent. A similar picture is observed with poultry: chicken is 10 percent more expensive, and turkey is 17 percent more expensive. And these are just average prices.
At the same time, the amount of meat produced in accordance with high environmental standards has decreased. The specialists note that, despite the decline in production volumes, a significant increase in prices prevents an equally strong loss of sales.
