According to the National Union of Agricultural Insurers, in 2021, NSA insurance companies compensated livestock breeders for losses from the loss of livestock in the amount of more than 1.9 billion rubles. This volume of insurance payments to livestock has become a record for the last 5 years. This was stated by the President of the NSA Korney Bizhdov, summing up the results of the past year according to the data of the NSA and the Bank of RUSSIA, the press service of the NSA writes.

“Insurance payments for dead livestock increased by at least 2.5 times compared to last year for the whole market, taking into account both the segment of subsidized contracts and insurance without state support,” commented Korney Bizhdov. - Such dynamics is primarily associated with the expansion of the frequency and geography of outbreaks of dangerous animal diseases. In the state-supported animal insurance segment, losses from infectious diseases accounted for 88% of all payments last year. At the same time, in addition to the cases of insured damage already familiar to the insurance market - outbreaks of African swine fever and bird flu - there was a large loss in the loss of cattle from pasteurellosis, noted in one of the regions of the Central Federal District.

In addition, NSA agricultural insurers made payments to livestock breeders in such insured events as mass poisoning of animals and death of livestock from fires and lightning strikes.

“It is also worth noting that in 2021, the largest known single payment in Russia was made to a single farm in agricultural insurance. The livestock farm received 539 million rubles for the loss of the pig population due to the outbreak of African swine fever in the Pskov region,” the President of the NSA emphasized.

The volume of the insurance market for farm animals in Russia amounted to 3.1 billion rubles in 2021. Of these, the bulk of the insurance premium - 2.2 billion rubles - was received under contracts concluded on standard terms of state support. “According to the results of 2021, insurance of industrial livestock has become the most dynamically developing segment of the state-supported agricultural insurance market. In total, 10.6 million conditional heads of farm animals were insured, an increase of 36% compared to 2020,” said Korney Bizhdov.

NSA insurance companies in the aggregate occupied 99% of this market segment at the end of the year. “As a rule, insurance of livestock risks is carried out today by concluding several agreements - in addition to the standard policy, under which the state subsidizes part of the contributions to the agrarian, insurance of additional farm risks on individual terms is added. Without state support, livestock is mainly insured in private backyards, and in some cases, livestock is insured as collateral for a loan,” said Korney Bizhdov.
