One of the main aspects that contributes to the interest in Katum sheep is their "self-shearing" properties. In conditions when the price of wool is decreasing, such sheep have become the best option for farmers. Katum sheep are highly productive, early maturing and prolific, and they have no sexual season for either females or males.

This breed has a number of notable qualities: they do not have wool in the traditional sense, but instead have a hair coat, which they lose twice a year. This eliminates the need for shearing. Katum sheep have a variety of colors, including shades of red: brown, light red and fawn.

The breed has excellent adaptability to various climatic conditions, which makes Katum sheep valuable for breeding in both cold and warm regions. Adult rams can reach 110 kg, and ewes - about 80 kg. These animals are also known for their good immunity and peaceful nature, which makes them easier to keep.

Historically, shedding breeds like Katum sheep originate from warm regions and are able to adapt to low-quality pastures. Despite their origins, Katum sheep consistently show high results in MEAT production and prefer natural grazing conditions.
