CANADA has approved imports of unprocessed beef and pork from Brazil. Brazilian Agriculture Minister Teresa Cristina da Costas Diaz made the announcement last week while on a business trip to Canada, speaking of "very good news for Brazilian MEAT processors."

In the future, Brazil is expected to be able to supply Canada with the equivalent of 137 million euros of beef and pork annually. Canada does not levy a tax on pork imports. An import duty of 26.5% applies to beef. However, there is a World Trade Organization (WTO) tariff quota, which means that a total of 76,400 tons of beef from Brazil can be exported to Canada tax-free.

Minister Da Costas Diaz also discussed with fertilizer producers in Canada the possibility of increasing their supply to Brazil. She said that in order for Brazilian farmers to continue to expand food production and contribute to the food security of Brazil and the world, the country needs sufficient fertilizer. According to her, the goal is not only to maintain the current level of purchases, but also to expand it.
