African swine fever was first detected in Germany in 2020 in a wild boar in Brandenburg. it then spread to several states, never reaching North Rhine-Westphalia. According to the report, the first animal was found dead, and three more were later found with the help of trained search dogs.
"Our highly professional search teams are working at full capacity. Teams of people and dogs help quickly and accurately locate dead boars, thereby containing the spread of the disease," said Silke Gorissen.Minister of Agriculture and Consumer Protection of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, reports Bichos de Campo.
"The main goal is to prevent the spread of a localized case of ASF among the wild boar population. I urge our pig farmers to pay special attention to established biosecurity measures to protect domestic pig populations from ASF, especially now. Of course, pig farmers are also strongly advised to exercise extreme caution," he noted.
It is proposed to install protective fences to prevent the migration of wild boars from this area, as well as to impose restrictions on the activities of pig farms in the region, hunting, and dog walking.
