Vietnam is targeting EXPORT markets in the coming years, but the sector is far behind other competitors present in Asia. Even though Vietnam is a country with great potential for pig production with a total pig population of more than 27.1 million, Vietnam still reports modest figures for the value of pork exports (about $50 million in 2020), according to the Ministry of Agriculture and rural development. (MARD).

The MARD Animal HEALTH Department said that Vietnam has so far only exported a limited amount of pigs and piglets to Hong Kong and Malaysia through official channels, while pork-derived products have been shipped to the US , Australia and Macau ( CHINA ). Overall, the volume of exported pork is still too small compared to the country's total pork production, which is expected to reach 3.87 million tons in 2021. On the other hand, in some markets of other countries, there is a strong demand for imports of Vietnamese pork products, but so far Vietnam has not yet met the requirements of partners.

Over the past few years, Vietnam's pig industry has excelled at the production stage, while the processing and marketing stages are still unclear. There are 1,300 large slaughterhouses in the country that focus on cattle and poultry and too few on pigs, and only 20% of the slaughterhouses have passed hygiene and safety tests.

Industry representatives urged the government to encourage enterprises with large resources to produce pork in a closed chain that includes all stages of production. Meanwhile, tighter disease control is needed, especially African swine fever. According to a white paper quoted by Nhadan magazine, Vietnam is expected to have 10-12 main linked production chains by 2025, which will produce a lot of clean, high-quality MEAT that meets the requirements of importing countries.
