September 18, Grodno. A COURT sentenced a drunk driver who caused grievous bodily harm to a man to four years in prison. The Grodno Regional Court press service told BelTA.

In March 2023, the accused was in a state ofA VAZ Chevrolet Niva driver , intoxicated, was driving a VAZ Chevrolet Niva. While driving along the Lukavitsa-Yunost 80 road in the Grodno district in the evening, he veered off the road into a farmland and stopped. A passenger got out to give the stuck vehicle a push. The drunk driver showed gross negligence and, while reversing, struck and subsequently ran over the victim. As a result of the accident, the victim sustained serious injuries, classified as life-threatening.

The defendant fully admitted guilt as charged. The court found his sincere remorse for the crime, the elimination of harm caused by the crime, and other actions aimed at mitigating the harm as mitigating circumstances. The court found the commission of the crime through negligence due to the deliberate violation of established safety regulations to be an aggravating circumstance.

The Grodno District Court found the defendant guilty of violating traffic regulations by driving a vehicle while intoxicated, causing serious bodily injury through negligence. Under Part 4 of Article 317 of the Criminal Code, the court sentenced him to four years' imprisonment in a general-security penal colony. He was also disqualified from operating any type of vehicle for eight years. The sentence has not yet entered into legal force and may be appealed and challenged in accordance with the established procedure.
