The Investigative Committee revealed the details of a fatal accident in Minsk involving a drunken lawless driver in a car sharing car

According to the investigation, on the evening of October 19, 2022, a 21-year-old Minsk resident was driving a rented Volkswagen in Minsk with his friend. Near house No. 24 on Brilevskaya Street, he did not notice the repair work being carried out and lost control at a curve in the road. The car rammed a metal barrier and drove into the oncoming lane, where it collided with several vehicles: Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes and Geely. The impact sent the young people flying out of the Volkswagen onto the roadway.


Several people were injured as a result of the accident. The car sharing passenger, a 22-year-old guy, was hospitalized with numerous injuries and died in the hospital a month later without regaining consciousness. In addition, a 29-year-old female passenger in the Honda suffered grievous bodily harm due to permanent disfigurement of her face and neck.

Investigators found that the 21-year-old Minsk resident driving a Volkswagen was in a state ofALCOHOL intoxication and driving at a speed of more than 140 km/h when the permissible speed is no more than 40 km/h. In addition, the young people were not wearing seat belts.

According to the case file, the defendant never had a driver's license. The night before the accident, he was drinking with his friend. Young people usedalcohol and wanted to ride a car share. The defendant’s friend was registered in a specialized mobile application, but due to a serious leg injury he could not get behind the wheel, so the defendant drove the car.

The driver’s actions are qualified under Part 4 of Article 317 (violation of traffic rules by a person driving a vehicle while intoxicated, which through negligence resulted in the death of a person or the infliction of grievous bodily harm) of the Criminal Code. A preventive measure in the form of detention was applied to him.
