COURT of Gomel issued a verdict in a criminal case regarding a traffic violation committed by a person driving a vehicle while intoxicated.
A 33-year-old Gomel resident was charged with driving while intoxicated , resulting in the negligent
death of a pregnant passenger, BelTA learned from the Gomel Regional Court.
Charges were brought against a 33-year-old Gomel resident who caused a fatal accident in the regional capital on the night of December 30-31 last year.
According to the court, the man had been drinking
vodka and
beer before getting behind the wheel. "He was driving through the city at a speed of at least 88 km/h, significantly exceeding the speed limit. His pregnant wife was also in the car. While driving, he struck a curb adjacent to the roadway on the right side of the road, then drove onto the shoulder, where he struck a lamppost. As a result of the accident, the pregnant woman suffered bodily injuries from which she died," the regional court reported.
At the court hearing, the man admitted his guilt and sincerely repented of his actions.
The court sentenced the driver to seven years' imprisonment in a general-security penal colony. He was also disqualified from operating any type of transport for eight years.
The sentence has not yet entered into legal force and can be appealed and challenged in accordance with established legal procedures.
