May 13, MINSK. Inflation in Poland hit a new high in April - 12.4%. Compared to the previous month, prices for goods and services increased by 2%, according to the Polish information portal of radio RMF 24, citing the Central Statistical Office (CSO) of Poland.
Earlier, in a short-term assessment, the CSO predicted that prices would rise by 12.3% year-on-year in April. In the final assessment, the inflation rate was higher by 0.1%.Compared to April 2021, prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages in Poland increased by 12.7%, while prices for ALCOHOL and cigarettes increased by 5.9%. The increase in prices for transport services reaches 21.1%. Visiting restaurants and hotels for the year has become more expensive by 14.1%, entertainment and cultural events - by 9.3%. Poles began to pay more for clothes and shoes (3.7%). Inflation also affected areas such as healthcare (6.5%), education (6.3%) and communications (2.6%).
The price of the grocery basket has risen significantly. Compared to April 2021, SUGAR prices increased by 35%, for poultry - by almost 47%, for beef - by 30%. Almost 26% more expensive butter and FLOUR. Bread prices rose by 23.7%.
The Polish Economic Institute predicts that in the coming months, rising food prices will further accelerate inflation in the country. The conflict in Ukraine has already led to higher prices for wheat, butter and MEAT. In addition, Europe is again struggling with the problem of drought, which will lead to higher prices for vegetables and fruits. "It cannot be ruled out that after the summer holidays, food prices will be almost 20% higher than last year," the Polish Institute of Economics said.
Earlier it was reported that the Polish economy entered a period of galloping inflation. In March, it was 10.9%. The last time the country's residents saw double-digit inflation was more than 20 years ago.
