MINSK . When the sale of beer and low-alcohol beverages in PET bottles will be banned in Belarus, Olga Sazonova,
HEAD of the waste management regulation department of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, said at a press conference, a BELTA correspondent reports.
"An important area is the adoption of a government resolution that provides for restrictions on the sale of beer and low-alcohol beverages in polymer packaging with a nominal volume exceeding 1.5 liters. This
ban will be introduced on January 1, 2026," Olga Sazonova said.
In addition, amendments and additions have been made to the legislation regulating the principles of extended producer responsibility. The list of goods and packaging subject to the obligation to collect waste includes various types of construction and finishing materials made of plastic, decorative items and artificial flowers, chargers, electronic cigarettes, etc. Incentive measures are provided for manufacturers of environmentally friendly packaging.
Olga Sazonova recalled that
work to limit the use of polymer containers has been underway in the country since 2020. A corresponding action plan has been approved, which was supplemented in
2024 and includes more than 20 points. This includes improving the waste management system, conducting scientific research, and information and educational work with the population.
"In 2024, 10 events were completed according to the established deadlines. Work is underway on three on an ongoing basis, nine are planned for 2025," Olga Sazonova said.
As an example of measures already implemented, she cited the mandatory availability of drinks in glass containers in trade, as well as paper bags, disposable paper cutlery, and a ban on the sale of certain types of plastic tableware in catering establishments.
