The former HEAD of Russian Railways, Vladimir Yakunin, believes that the people who included him in the UK sanctions list are incompetent, since he left the post several years ago. He told RBC about this through a representative.
“Inclusion of me in the sanctions lists as President of Russian Railways reveals the amazing incompetence of the people who make them up. I have retired from this position for seven years now, and I am not engaged in any other state or commercial activity. Anyone with Internet access can easily find this information,” Yakunin said.
The ex-head of Russian Railways noted that such actions call into question the appropriateness of restrictive measures.

Yakunin was included in the UK sanctions list on April 13. At the same time, in the document he is called the president of Russian Railways, although he left this post in August 2015. Restrictions on him include an asset freeze and a travel ban. Together with him, more than 200 individuals and legal entities fell under the sanctions of London, including Vladimir Yevtushenkov, the largest co-owner of AFK Sistema, Vagit Alekperov, president of LUKOIL, Said Kerimov, a shareholder of the Polyus gold mining company, and head of the political council of the Ukrainian party Opposition Platform - For Life » Viktor Medvedchuk and others. Since the end of March, Russian Railways have been under British restrictive measures, and since the end of February they have been under the sanctions of CANADA and the European Union.
In August 2015, RBC reported that Yakunin, who was then in charge of Russian Railways, was offered to move to the Federation Council. His candidacy for senator from the Kaliningrad region was put forward by the candidate for the election of the head of the region from United RUSSIA, Nikolai Tsukanov, who at that time was acting governor. Yakunin agreed. At the same time, he confirmed plans to leave the Russian Railways company, which he headed for ten years. However, then the ex-head of Russian Railways refused to become a senator.
Tsukanov said that Yakunin called him and explained this decision by saying that he "has many tasks ahead of him and he will not be able to represent the region in the Federation Council now."
