US President Donald Trump is considering imposing sanctions on Moscow this week, sources told The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
The newspaper's interlocutors noted that the new restrictions will most likely not include banking sanctions; other options are being discussed. In addition, it is likely that Trump will not increase pressure on Russia.
The president himself said on May 25 that he was “absolutely” considering sanctions against Russia. He linked this to the fact that President Vladimir Putin has “completely lost his mind” and is “unnecessarily killing a lot of people” in Ukraine. “I’ve always said he wants ALL of Ukraine, not just part of it, and that may be true, but if he gets it, it will lead to the fall of Russia!” Trump said.
The WSJ also writes about his thoughts about leaving the settlement process if the “final push” does not produce results.
"President Trump has made clear that he wants a negotiated peace deal. President Trump has also been careful to keep all options open," White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt told the publication.
The New York Times (NYT) also writes about Trump's possible withdrawal from the negotiating process. The publication's interlocutors told details of the Republican's conversation with the heads of Germany, France, Italy,Finland and the European Commission on May 19, following telephone conversations between Trump and Putin. NYT sources say that in a conversation with the Europeans, the American president made it clear that he would not increase sanctions pressure on Russia.
“He basically said, ‘I’m pulling out,’” one of the sources said, noting that it echoed Vice President J.D. Vance’s statement that the U.S. was “more than willing to pull out.”
Responding to Trump's words about Putin, his press secretary Dmitry Peskov thanked the United States for its mediation efforts. "This is a very important moment, which is connected with the emotional overload of absolutely everyone and with emotional reactions. We are closely monitoring all reactions," he said.
