The US is preparing financial sanctions against "pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine," according to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing sources. According to the newspaper, the measures should put diplomatic pressure on Moscow and "dissuade it from invading" the neighboring country.

The sanctions will affect at least four people, they mean the freezing of their assets in the United States, the newspaper writes. Against whom exactly the restrictions will be introduced, it is not specified. Washington is expected to announce these measures on Thursday, January 20.

The sanctions will be adopted as part of US President Joe Biden's April 2021 executive order against individuals involved in Russia's "external aggression", writes WSJ.

The US Department of State and Treasury did not respond to the publication's request.
