US authorities have detained an oil tanker en route from RUSSIA to New Orleans, Louisiana, according to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and REUTERS, citing sources.
According to the WSJ, the Daytona tanker belongs to the Greek TMS Tankers. The vessel was chartered by Vitol, based in Switzerland. Daytona departed from the port of Taman in early June with a cargo of fuel oil and vacuum gas oil (a type of petroleum product obtained by distilling fuel oil).
Information about the ship's route is confirmed by MarineTraffic data. Judging by them, Daytona is now anchored on the Mississippi River, in the suburbs of New Orleans. According to the service, the tanker sailing under the flag of Malta arrived there on June 27.
The United States described schemes for legally circumventing sanctions when trading oil from Russia Economics
A spokesman for Vitol told Reuters that the ship was carrying cargo "not of Russian origin." Agency sources indicated that it was intended for the Valero refinery.
The US banned oil and gas imports from Russia in early March. President Joe Biden then said that the decision would also hit the United States, but the authorities had to take this step in order to emerge from the crisis more independent.
In early June, Biden said that Washington and allies were discussing replacing the refusal to import oil from Russia with the possibility of purchasing it at prices below import prices. Later, United States Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen indicated that Washington was interested in bringing Russian oil to the world market, as this would help keep prices down. At the same time, the United States and allies aim to limit Russia's income from the oil sector, she said. BLOOMBERG reported that the countries of the Group of Seven (G7) are discussing the possibility of setting a ceiling on the price of Russian oil by introducing a ceiling on its insurance and transportation.
