The Hordaland District COURT in Norway has sentenced a 34-year-old Russian citizen to 90 days in prison for launching a drone in violation of sanctions laws, NRK reports. His drone and mobile phone are also confiscated.
Since the Russian was in custody before the hearing, his term was reduced by 29 days. He was detained on October 20 in the municipality of Ullensvang in the Hordaland district of the province of Vestland (Western Norway).
At the end of February, Norway closed the skies to Russian aircraft and extended this restriction to drones. Russian individuals and organizations have been banned from launching drones over Norwegian territory. At the trial, the Russian stated that he did not know about the ban. The court doubted this: according to its data, information about other Russians arrested for using drones in Norway was sent to the defendant by mail. “However, he continued to fly the drones without understanding whether there were any special rules regarding drone flights for Russians,” the court said in a statement.

The prosecution alleges that the man launched a drone in October at 16 different locations in Norway, including tourist spots. The accused explained that he worked in a travel agency.
Several more Russians were detained in Norway for violating the ban on launching drones, including Andrei Yakunin, co-founder of the Venture Investments & Yield Management (VIYM) fund and the eldest son of the former HEAD of Russian Railways, Vladimir Yakunin. Four detainees have already been released.
