The interbank payment information transfer system SWIFT may be involved in a "sanctions spiral" against Russia. This was stated in an interview with RIA Novosti by Dmitry Birichevsky, DIRECTOR of the Department for Economic Cooperation of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
"It's no secret that threats are being heard, primarily from the United States, to disconnect Russia from the SWIFT system," he said, adding that only the UN Security Council can impose appropriate sanctions .
According to him, the measures that a certain country or group of states intends to take cannot be called sanctions. “Sanctions can be adopted by decision of an authorized structure, and what our Western partners use is more like barriers in order to protect their own producers and protect their own interests on the world stage,” the HEAD of the department believes.
As Birichevsky noted, Moscow has concerns that SWIFT may be involved in this "sanctions spiral".
