Iran would like to conclude an agreement on the joint production of cars with the Russian company AvtoVAZ, Najafi Manesh, chairman of the board of directors of the Iran Spare Parts Production Association, told RIA Novosti.

“Iran and RUSSIA are currently in an exceptional position; perhaps never before in history has there been such a situation when these two countries have become so close to each other. We must seize the opportunity and make a long-term plan for this cooperation to continue under other circumstances,” Manesh explained.

In mid-August, Kommersant reported that sales of cars from the Iranian company Iran Khodro could soon begin in Russia. Moreover, according to the HEAD of this company, Mehdi Khatibi, all the necessary negotiations with the Russian side have already been held.

About 20 years ago, Iran Khodro cars were sold in Russia. So, the Samand sedan based on the Peugeot 405 model could be bought from us in 2006–2009. However, during all this time, the Russians have purchased only a few thousand of these sedans. Now Iran Khodro plans to EXPORT 100 thousand cars annually, which is five times more than the current volumes.

In turn, AvtoVAZ has been negotiating the supply of Lada cars to Iran since 2019. “AvtoVAZ assembles cars in Egypt, there is an assembly plant there, negotiations are underway in a number of other countries, such as, for example, Iran. We are talking about both delivery and assembly,” Viktor Kladov, DIRECTOR for international cooperation and regional policy at Rostec, said at the time.

Against the backdrop of Western sanctions, many automotive brands have announced the suspension of activities or complete withdrawal from the Russian market. Among them are Volvo, Volkswagen (combines the brands Volkswagen, SKODA, Audi, Lamborghini, Bentley and Ducati), General Motors, Mercedes Benz and others.
