The European Union is ready to introduce a second package of sanctions against Russia, said Deputy HEAD of the European Commission (EC) Valdis Dombrovskis. it is reported by REUTERS.
According to Dombrovskis, they will relate to the area of trade, in particular, they will include export control measures. The deputy head of the EC acknowledged that the new measures, as well as potential counter-sanctions from Russia, will have economic consequences for the EU. “But the security and territorial integrity of Ukraine are at stake here, <...> so we need to be able to respond and also bear some economic costs if necessary,” he said.
New sanctions will be applied if the Russian military enters Ukrainian territory - outside the regions controlled by the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics (DNR and LNR). “Russia has decided to go for a major escalation of this conflict by recognizing the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk republics and clarifying that he does not mean the territories controlled by them, but the entire territory of Donbass,” Dombrovskis said.
He added that in the event of "further aggression by Russia and further invasion of the territory of Ukraine," the European Union is ready for tougher measures. On Thursday, February 24, an emergency summit will be held to discuss this issue.
