Lithuania must conduct additional checks on road and rail transit to Kaliningrad due to EU sanctions, TASS reports citing a representative of the European Commission.

According to him, some sanctions "in relation to specific Russian exports", such as metal products and building materials, come into force "already now."

“This means that Lithuania must apply additional checks for road and rail transit through the EU,” said the EC representative. He called the checks appropriate and proportionate.

“They will be based on prudent risk management to avoid sanctions evasion and ensure free transit,” the European Commission spokesman explained.

At the same time, according to him, supplies of essential goods to Kaliningrad are going smoothly. The EC will provide additional guidance to Lithuania along the way, he stressed.

The HEAD of the Agency for International and Interregional Relations of the Kaliningrad Region, Alla Ivanova, pointed out that the deadlines for solving the problem with transit are “running out”, since suppliers need to plan the delivery of goods to the region. “In any case, the problem will no longer be “swept under the carpet”, and the sooner decisions are made to normalize transit from RUSSIA to Russia, the sooner the traditional logistics of deliveries to the region will return to its place,” Ivanova said (quoted from Klops.ru)

Lithuania has banned rail transit through its territory of Russian goods subject to EU sanctions and transported from Russian regions to Kaliningrad since June 18. Vilnius explained that the restriction of transit is connected with EU sanctions against Russia. Moscow protested.

On June 25, the European Parliamentarian from Lithuania, Petras Auštrevičius, announced that the EC was discussing a draft document allowing the transportation of sanctioned goods “from Russia to Russia”. Later, adviser to the Lithuanian president, Kestutis Budrys, said that the country's authorities agreed with the European Commission on the basic principles of transit to Kaliningrad.

The governor of the region, Anton Alikhanov, noted that the EC itself got confused in its sanctions, and assured that the region could deliver goods that fell under the sanctions by sea, “there is something”.
