After taking office as US President, Donald Trump will not be able to single-handedly lift the sanctions imposed under Joe Biden ; he will need Congressional approval to do so, senior officials in the current presidential administration said, The Washington Post (WP) reports.
The newspaper's sources noted that some Republican lawmakers asked Biden to introduce tougher economic measures against Moscow. WP points out that Trump's chosen national security adviser Mike Waltz admitted that the US could tighten sanctions to put pressure on Russia in the process of settling the conflict with Ukraine.
John Kirby, coordinator for strategic communications at the White House National Security Council, said the Biden administration kept the Trump team informed of all major steps and actions and the reasons for them.

The White House called the new sanctions the most significant restrictions imposed on the Russian energy sector.
Gazprom Neft said it had been preparing for the possible introduction of new restrictions against it for the past two years. The company called the decision on sanctions unfounded.
Trump said during the election campaign that he "doesn't like" sanctions and wants to use them less. On January 10, the Financial Times reported, citing sources, that the European Union fears that the new American president will lift the sanctions and is therefore reviewing the decrees of the current US administration. As the newspaper wrote, the EU hopes that Trump will keep the sanctions in place in order to "use them as potential leverage in any possible ceasefire talks with Moscow."
President Vladimir Putin has named the lifting of Western sanctions as one of the conditions for starting ceasefire talks in Ukraine .
