“The chairman of the Senate (the governing body of the university), Professor Kristaps Jaudzems, will convene an extraordinary meeting at which the process of depriving Russian millionaire Petr Aven of an honorary doctorate will be initiated,” the report says.

An honorary doctorate was awarded to Aven on March 25, 2013 for "scientific and practical contribution to the development of Latvia and cooperation with Russia". Aven is also a professor at the Moscow Higher School of Economics.

“The paramount priority is to reaffirm our solidarity with Ukraine, not only in words but also in deeds. Petr Aven supported the policies of [Vladimir] Putin and Russian aggression in Ukraine, so he will lose his honorary doctorate from the University of Latvia.
