The United States will impose secondary sanctions on countries that buy any amount of oil and petrochemicals from Iran, US President Donald Trump reminded on his Truth Social page.
"These countries will not be allowed to do business with the United States in any way," he wrote.
According to him, all purchases of Iranian oil or petroleum products must be stopped immediately.
The Iran nuclear deal (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, JCPOA) is a document according to which Iran, in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions, limits its nuclear program, excluding the creation of nuclear weapons.
In 2018, the United States, during Trump's first presidential term, withdrew from the JCPOA and imposed new sanctions against Iran; a year later, Tehran suspended its obligations under the deal.
In April 2024 , Iran's oil exports hit a six-year high, mostly going to CHINA . "The Iranians have mastered the art of circumventing sanctions. If the Biden administration is really going to have an impact, it needs to shift its focus to China," said Fernando Ferreira, HEAD of geopolitical risk at Rapidan Energy in the US.
After Trump became president for a second term in January 2025, the United States and Iran began discussing the latter's nuclear program again. The American leader expressed his desire to conclude a new nuclear deal and threatened military action and tariffs if Tehran did not agree to the deal.
The countries have already held three rounds of indirect talks mediated by Oman. As The Times of Israel has learned, at the most recent one, on April 26, the parties discussed some issues but did not reach any agreements. According to The Wall Street Journal, the stumbling block was the possibility for Tehran to continue enriching uranium.
On April 30, the State Department imposed sanctions on seven entities involved in trade in Iranian petroleum products and petrochemicals and blocked two vessels involved in the shipment.
On May 1, Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad al-Busaidi said the fourth US-Iran meeting scheduled for May 3 had been postponed for "logistical reasons." Iran's Foreign Ministry confirmed that the talks had been postponed.
