Trump also instructed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to review Syria's status as a state sponsor of terrorism and the decision to recognize Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (recognized as terrorist and banned in RUSSIA) as a foreign terrorist organization.

In addition, the order orders a review of the inclusion of Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa on the US list of especially dangerous global terrorists.

In May, the European Union officially lifted economic sanctions against Syria . 24 items were removed from the list, including the Central Bank of Syria and companies working in the oil production and cotton processing sectors.

The US, in turn, removed Syrian Airlines, several banks, including the Central Bank, and shipping companies from the sanctions list. The US Treasury Department also allowed transactions with the Syrian oil company Sytrol and some other energy sector organizations.

Discussions about lifting decades-long sanctions against Syria began after former President Bashar al-Assad was ousted and Ahmed al-Sharaa, the HEAD of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, became the transitional president.
