On February 23, the United States will announce sanctions against RUSSIA due to the death in the colony of Alexei Navalny , White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said, AFP reports.
“At the direction of President [Joe] Biden, we will announce a major package of sanctions on Friday of this week to hold Russia accountable for what happened to Mr. Navalny,” he said.
Biden, earlier commenting on Navalny’s death , called it a “war crime” and blamed President Vladimir Putin for it. The American president was then reminded of his words at a press conference in Geneva in 2021, when Biden said he had warned the Russian president of “devastating consequences” if Navalny died. “That was three years ago, now they face a completely different responsibility,” the American leader said now.
Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov called such statements by Western politicians “boorish.” He also pointed out that the results of the investigation into Navalny’s death are still unknown, “all necessary actions are being carried out.”
The death of 47-year-old Alexei Navalny in a colony in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug was reported by the Federal Penitentiary Service for the region on February 16. He was transferred to the Polar Wolf colony in the village of Kharp in December last year. The death notice stated that he died at 14:17 local time (12:17 Moscow time).
The Federal Penitentiary Service stated that Navalny felt ill after the walk and almost immediately lost consciousness. An ambulance crew was called, but “resuscitation efforts did not yield positive results.”
The EU also promised to introduce sanctions against Russia due to the death of the oppositionist . The HEAD of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, proposed renaming the EU sanctions regime for human rights violations in honor of Navalny.
