Switzerland has joined the sanctions imposed by the European Union against Russia in connection with the military operation in Ukraine, REUTERS reports, citing a government statement.

“In connection with the ongoing Russian military intervention in Ukraine, the Federal Council decided on February 28 to apply the sanctions packages imposed by the European Union on February 23 and 25,” the statement said.

Switzerland has also joined the personal sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The restrictions are already in place.

In addition, Switzerland has banned five Russian "oligarchs close to Putin" from entering the country, Justice Minister Karin Keller-Sutter said. She did not name specific names, arguing that for confidentiality reasons.
