Kommersant, citing a letter from the SSJ100 manufacturer, previously reported that due to the impossibility of repairing French engines, the aircraft fleet could be reduced by five times.Rostec called the data a negative scenario for 2022Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft at the factory

The data that the Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) fleet may be reduced by five times by 2030 are based on a negative scenario for 2022 and are already outdated. This was reported to TASS at the state corporation Rostec.

Kommersant, citing a letter from the aircraft manufacturer to Irkut Corporation (part of Rostec), previously reported that due to the lack of spare parts and the inability to repair the “hot part” of the SSJ100, the fleet of aircraft from the current 150 could be reduced to 28 “old cars” already by 2030.

“These are old calculations, they were made in 2022 in order to provide, among other things, the most negative scenarios. Today is May 2023, and it is already obvious that this will not happen. UAC, Irkut and colleagues from other companies are doing everything to ensure that the country is provided with aircraft, and that the current fleet is serviced and continues to fly. Complicated systematic work on import substitution is being carried out, our own components and assemblies are being created, ”Rostec commented.

As Kommersant noted, a possible reduction in the fleet at Irkut was associated with a shortage of replacement engines and the inability to repair French SaM146 engines. If the repair work on the “hot part” of the engine is mastered, then 106 aircraft will be saved on the wing.

At the same time, in the summer of 2022, the Ministry of Transport predicted the continued operation of all 170 short-haul aircraft (including the SSJ100, Yak-42 and Embraer), the newspaper recalls. Irkut explained to Kommersant that the updated data reflects "efforts aimed at maintaining the stable operation of the SSJ100 fleet." The company noted that, according to preliminary data from air carriers, "there is interest in remotorization of the SSJ100 fleet."

A newspaper source close to Rostec said that the manufacturer has solutions that will increase the use of the SSJ fleet with SaM146 engines "for a sufficiently long period." According to the interlocutor, by this time new Russian aircraft will appear, and "the topic of remotorization will cease to be relevant."

The press service of the Irkut corporation told RBC that in the near future the airlines will begin to receive fully imported serial SSJ New aircraft at a rate of up to 20 units per year and MS-21 with an increase in output to 72 units per year. “The hypotheses from the letter of November 2022, to which colleagues from Kommersant refer, relate only to the current fleet and do not consider new arrivals of aircraft on the Russian market. In addition, they describe the risks of doing nothing and sitting back. As you know, May 2023 is in the yard, and during this time serious work has been carried out jointly with the UEC and airlines, ”the company explained.

The cost of a set of two engines is usually estimated at 50-60% of the price of a new aircraft, Kommersant notes. With the cost of the SSJ100 at the end of 2021 about 2–2.5 billion rubles, the new engine, according to the most minimal estimates, will cost 1.3–1.8 billion rubles.

Superjet is the result of cooperation between designers from “more than 20 world leaders in the aircraft industry,” according to the website of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC, part of Rostec). The SaM146 turbofan engines for the Superjet were manufactured by PowerJet, a joint venture between the French Safran Aircraft Engines and UEC-Saturn (a subsidiary of UEC). Moreover, some parts of the motor were produced and repaired in France, others - in RUSSIA.

After the imposition of sanctions against the Russian aviation industry in 2022, the supply of spark plugs and other consumables needed to service SSJ100 engines has practically ceased. At the same time, the aircraft became especially important for the industry, since Russian-made aircraft were not subject to the requirements of Western lessors and could not be arrested abroad.

In total, there are 12 Superjet operators in Russia, which in total operate 160 such aircraft, follows from the data of the Federal Air Transport Agency. In March, companies flying the Superjet reported they were facing a shortage of spark plugs from the United States . Vladimir Panfilov, First Deputy General DIRECTOR of IrAero, said that the situation leads to the risk of stopping part of the Superjet fleet until the entire fleet of aircraft stops flying.

In March 2022, the Ministry of Industry and Trade promised to speed up work on the Russian version of the Superjet. To do this, it is necessary, among other things, to replace the foreign-made SaM146 engine with the Russian PD-8. The first flight of the Sukhoi Superjet New (SSJ New) aircraft with Russian equipment will take place in May, Rostec reported.
