Politico has learned that the EU has not agreed on the 11th package of sanctions against Russia

EU ambassadors in closed talks on June 7 failed to reach an agreement on the draft 11th package of sanctions against Russia, Politico reports, citing diplomatic sources.

According to them, after the initial draft of the 11th package of sanctions was blocked in May, the ambassadors of the EU countries continued negotiations, but so far have not been able to reach an agreement. Their next meeting will take place on June 14.

“We are already getting closer [to an agreement],” one of the sources told Politico.

Since the beginning of the Russian military operation in Ukraine , the EU countries have already introduced ten packages of sanctions against Moscow, the last one was approved at the end of February. Since the beginning of March, Brussels has been developing the 11th. It will focus on preventing the circumvention of sanctions, said the HEAD of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen.

On May 22, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna reported that a new package of sanctions could be agreed by the end of June, when the EU summit would take place. “We expect to finalize it as soon as possible,” she said.

According to Politico, the draft 11th package of sanctions is criticized by Hungary and Greece, who want some of their companies to be excluded from the Ukrainian blacklist of “war sponsors”. BLOOMBERG reported in early June that the EU countries may partially abandon the proposal to ban entry into European ports for ships with sanctioned goods. The demands of Greece and Hungary are also being discussed , agency sources added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called anti-Russian sanctions illegitimate. He noted that the West tried to “snap the economy out of the blue” of the country, but it failed. The Ministry of Finance expressed the opinion that Brussels had exhausted the possibilities for painful restrictions against Moscow.
