Blocking the assets of Russians is illegitimate, trampling on the foundations of international law and the very foundations of the international economy. This was stated at a briefing by the press secretary of the President of RUSSIA Dmitry Peskov, RBC correspondent reports.

“We do not perceive all these blockages and consider them nothing more than a violation of international law and an encroachment on property, on state and private property - that is, in general, the foundations of the world economy,” Peskov said.

Peskov was asked to comment on a BLOOMBERG publication that said the EU could not find and freeze some of the assets of Russian billionaires who fell under sanctions . According to the agency, Brussels has so far frozen €20.9 billion of Russian assets, while Russia's total foreign direct investment in the EU in 2019 was estimated at €136 billion. Bloomberg explains the difficulties by the fact that assets are often hidden behind complex company structures. or intermediaries.

“Let the Europeans deal with these problems themselves,” Peskov said.

In response to the Russian military operation in Ukraine, the EU has imposed ten packages of tough sanctions against Moscow. Personal restrictions against businessmen imply, in particular, the freezing of assets in the bloc.

The HEAD of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, last October called the goal of Brussels the confiscation, not the freezing of Russian assets. In December, European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reinerds proposed a way to confiscate the property of Russian businessmen “based on potential laws to criminalize the circumvention of sanctions”: in this case, it would be possible to confiscate the assets of individuals and companies based on COURT verdicts. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly called for the use of confiscated funds to restore the country.

Because of the sanctions, the assets of not only businessmen, but also the Central Bank of Russia were frozen: after the start of the military operation in Ukraine, Western countries blocked about half of the $640 billion of the regulator's gold and foreign exchange reserves.
